How to Reduce Food Wastage with Simple Inventory Tracking
Wastage is a quiet cost. It rarely shows up as one big loss; it leaks away a little at a time. Tracking is the first step to stopping it.
Start by counting
You cannot manage what you do not measure. Begin with a weekly count of your most expensive and most perishable items - proteins, dairy and fresh produce.
Set a minimum level
A minimum stock level for each item gives you a warning before you run out, and stops panic buying at higher prices.
Record spoilage and staff meals
When wasted items are recorded with a reason, patterns appear: too much prepared in advance, wrong storage, or over-ordering.
Compare usage to sales
If you sold 40 portions but used enough ingredients for 55, something is off. Linking recipes to stock lets the system show you the gap.
Review weekly
Spend ten minutes each week looking at the wastage and low-stock reports. Small fixes - smaller batches, better labelling, tighter ordering - add up quickly.
